BBH Donor-Advised Fund Program
A Donor-Advised Fund is a superlative way for individuals to manage their charitable giving.
DAFs are flexible, straightforward, and provide an immediate tax benefit. Fund advisors can recommend
grants to any qualified, tax-exempt charitable organization in the United States, while
not being burdened with administrative details.
Brown Brothers Harriman is pleased to offer the BBH Donor-Advised Fund Program, which
allows our clients to have BBH manage their charitable funds while taking full advantage of this
philanthropic vehicle.

BBH has partnered with some of America’s preeminent community foundations, each of them experts in
philanthropic services as well as the issues and opportunities unique to their local communities. They are:
- California Community Foundation
- The New York Community Trust
- Foundation For The Carolinas
- Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties
- The Chicago Community Trust and Affiliates
- The Philadelphia Foundation
- The Dallas Foundation
Advantages of a Donor-Advised Fund
-
A DAF offers similar benefits of a private foundation—achieving charitable goals, reducing taxes,
estate planning—but with lower costs, fewer administrative responsibilities, higher income tax
deduction limitations, no excise taxes, and less restrictive annual minimum grant requirements.
-
It permits donors to plan their gifts so as to obtain
an income tax deduction in the year desired, while
postponing the distribution of charitable grants to
worthwhile causes to be determined at a time of
their choosing.
- It also allows one generation to create the charitable
resources to share or introduce the next generation
(Successor Donor Advisors) to philanthropy.
- Tax Deductibility
- Maximum charitable and tax advantages allowed under federal law.
- Avoids limitations on deductibility of gifts to private foundations.
- Value of DAF excluded from donor’s taxable estate.
- Required Charitable Distributions
- As compared to a private foundation, a DAF is not required to make specific schedule.
- May function as a vehicle for private foundation conversion: where an desired, a DAF can be the recipient of private foundation assets.

Established in 1929, the Dallas Foundation is the oldest community foundation in Texas. The
